This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
