World Health Organization Sounds Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Less than one in 10 individuals who could benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy are able to get them, caution the WHO as it publishes its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Considering over a billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is advocating for increased and just availability to GLP-1 medication.

According to projections, over two billion could be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The new guidelines recognises that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with holistic and continuous treatment," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are significant barriers to widespread availability to the injections that can help people shift substantial body mass, explains the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Even in the present most favorable outlook, the supply of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, according to the WHO.

The advice urges governments and firms to widen availability, by approaches such as patent sharing.

A patent on a key compound – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Injections Function

These medications imitate a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and boost feelings of fullness so people eat less.

Patients commonly start to lose weight in the initial weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Research suggests patients may see weight return a year later of discontinuing the treatment, because their normal food cravings come back.

Being overweight or obese elevates your chance for contracting medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain cancers.

Obesity impacts individuals in all nations and was linked to over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
